Anxiously Awaiting

Jesus’ birth is without a doubt the most significant event in human history. This single event marked a dividing point in history. In God’s salvation story humanity had been waiting, yearning, and looking for a Messiah. Mankind was lead into a relentless pursuit to fill the void they all felt. Some pursued idols and other things to fill the gap and others relentlessly pursued with great anticipation God’s provision of a Messiah to save them from their shortcomings and fill the void.

The reality is today we are still each on this same relentless pursuit. Sometimes it leads us down paths that ultimately are unfulfilling and useless because instead of pursuing Jesus Christ, the Messiah, we pursue other temporal things. During this series we will take a look at 4 people and their relentless pursuit of Jesus. They all came from different places spiritually as well as physically; each had their own reasons. Some set out on this pursuit due to curiosity, others out of pride, others had been searching and anxiously awaiting the Messiah, and some found themselves surprised by grace. Most every person identifies with one of these four stories in scripture.

Give Like CRAZY!

“Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. 25 The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. 26 People curse those who hoard their grain, but they bless the one who sells in time of need. 27 If you search for good, you will find favor; but if you search for evil, it will find you! 28 Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.” Proverbs 11:24-28

A Spending Crisis

. In the United States we have a spending problem. We only produce XXXXXXXXXX amount of the stuff in the world but consume XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We buy until we run out of our own money and then when we run out beg VISA, Mastercard, or Amercian Excess to give us some of their money (which is actually our money by the way) and gladly pay them 12, 15, or even upwards of 20% interest back. The last statistic I saw showed that on average American’s have a -% savings rate; in other words on average Americans spend more than they make annually. It is totally counter-cultural to not have a credit card. The reality is that the problem in most America households is not an income problem; there is a spending crisis. How can we tell if there is a spending crisis? Look back at what Jesus said and then ask this question…where does my bank statement say the desires of my heart are?

Saving for a Rainy Day

How many of you aspire to retire with no savings and nothing to live off of except Social Insecurity if it’s even around by then? It is ironic that in one of the most affluent countries in the world we’ve got people that retire broke all the time living off of a small S.S. check. Most companies no longer have the set-up where you work there for so long and then collect a pension after you retire. Statistics say that very few American households have even $1,000 saved in a bank account. When an emergency happens we remember the motto, “Life takes VISA”. We spend as if there is no tomorrow and while that may sound fun and be fun it’s stupid! I’ve got an expert authority on this that agrees: Proverbs 21:20- “The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.”
